Helen Keller¡¯s Object Relations
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
Helen Keller¡¯s life history is very instructive and impressive to us in terms of the human beings¡¯ infinite value and potentiality. She was a triple handicapped woman, and a wonderful miracle worker. She has been a symbol of the human victory and hope. All the psychological theories become silent to her marvelous life story, as if the argumentative Pharisee become silent to the Jesus¡¯s miracle. Nevertheless the evident truth is that she did not show any kind of miracle, but only the amazing self-denying spirit. There were many incomprehensible mysteries in her life history. I wonder if she did show the enigmatic maturity process, then how did she keep her own mental health? Was she neurotic? If not, what kind of factors helped the maintenance of her mental health? Psychoanalysis not always explain about her mystery, but at least take an interest in her developmental process. I have an impression that two key factors were involved to her mature mentality and character; namely positive experiences of early mother-infant relationship with the good-enough mothering and holding just before her sudden physical breakdown, and Sullivan¡¯s active intervention with longstanding protective caring and guidance from the postoedipal period. At least in her life I would like to stress that the mentioned two factors above played the decisive role in her mature psychic development.
